Joy

Hi there! My name is Joy Payne (she/her/they/them). I began working at Anatomy Tattoo behind the front desk as Tomma’s assistant in 2022. My background in graphic design and a passion for fine art led me into the world of tattooing; the amazing artists/clients of Anatomy gave me the confidence and opportunity to pursue my dream. Now, I’m so excited to announce my tattoo apprenticeship beginning in 2024! I’m studying various styles, from American traditional to anime, and I am gradually learning to speak Japanese on my own time. My favorite subject matter to paint is often from the natural world. I’m also greatly inspired by pop culture and my queer community, mixed with surreal visual concepts. I am especially keen to try hyper-realism (creatures, landscapes, portraits) and wood-cut engraving style (medieval, gothic, ornate) tattoos in the future. Portland will always feel like home, but I love and find inspiration in traveling whenever possible. Catch me at tattoo conventions around the US and eventually in Japan someday! I am obsessed with my two daemon cats (Vera & Arling), anime shows, fantasy books, escaping into the woods, and nerdy conversations. Thank you for reading this far and considering me as your artist; it would be my honor to share time, space, and lifetime art with you.
